The branch that adapts, approximates and computes mathematical method to model and solve problems arising outside mathematics itself: differential equations describing physical systems, numerical analysis for approximating what cannot be solved in closed form, optimization, and the algorithms of modern scientific computing. Isaac Newton's own calculus was applied mathematics from its first invention, developed to describe motion and gravitation; the field expanded enormously with the digital computer, which let mathematicians simulate systems too complex for any closed-form solution.

Facts
Central Question
How can mathematical method be adapted, approximated and computed to model, predict and solve real problems that arise outside mathematics itself? 1
Key Debate
Whether a numerically computed approximate solution, produced and checked only by a machine no human can trace step by step, counts as genuine mathematical knowledge on the same footing as a closed-form proof a mathematician can verify by hand. 1
Cross-Tradition Connections

Associated With

Algorithmic game theory, computing equilibria and analyzing the computational complexity of finding them, is a substantial modern subfield shared with applied and computational mathematics.
