German-American mathematician who helped found Euclidean Ramsey theory and the study of arithmetic properties of analytic functions. He served as a mathematical assistant to Albert Einstein and later spent most of his career at UCLA. With Paul Erdos he formulated the Erdos-Straus conjecture on Egyptian fractions.
