British mathematician who, with Bryan Birch, formulated the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture between 1962 and 1965. He also served Cambridge University as Vice-Chancellor from 1979 to 1981 and chaired the University Grants Committee, succeeded his father as sixteenth baronet in 1975, and was knighted in 1987.
